Let Ann teach you how to turn a photograph into a quilt in this 4 day class!
Quilts you design are a great complement to the wonderful range of traditional (and modern!) quilts that entice us. Our most memorable quilts are often those that speak to special times, places, things, and people in our lives. Using your photographs as the place to begin the design process offers a personalized and memorable look to your quilts. This class takes you through the design process – from photo to pictorial quilt. This style of quilt emphasizes the use of patterned cotton fabrics in unique ways yet is grounded in traditional piecing methods. The result is a quilt design with a somewhat abstract quality that is uniquely your own.
This process oriented multi-day workshop is based on the techniques and design approach developed by Ruth McDowell. In this approach, an overall piecing diagram provides the framework for the quilts, while fabrics bring these quilts to life. This approach to patchwork celebrates both of these elements and produces stunning, lively quilts that have a somewhat abstract quality.
A brief discussion introduces the methods and techniques found in Ruth McDowell’s book Piecing Workshop and its companion volume Design Workshop. We then focus on translating images into pieceable quilts by relating piecing options to the overall quilt design. Each student will work on their own pieced design based on images each student brings to class. Individual help throughout the workshop and occasional group demonstrations will focus on fabric options and piecing strategies.
